What Should You Wear to a Christmas Party at Work?

The holiday season is upon us, and you may have an upcoming work party to attend. Knowing what to wear can be tricky. Are there rules? Do I need to dress up more than usual? Well, we're here to help answer those questions for you!

Have an Option for Covering Up

When it comes to what you should wear to a Christmas party at work, the easiest way to make sure that you are covered is by having an option for covering up. This doesn’t mean that you always have to wear your coat, but it does mean that if you want one, there should be something in your closet that can easily be pulled on over your shoulders or arms. Here are some examples:

  • Sweater
  • Jacket
  • Blazer
  • Cardigan

Think About Temperature and Comfort

Think about temperature and comfort. If you're going to a Christmas party at work, consider the temperature in your office or other location before choosing your outfit. Are you indoors? Outdoors? Is it going to be hot or cold? If you're indoors, consider wearing layers that can be removed if it gets too warm—you'll be more comfortable if this happens! On the other hand, layers will help keep you warm if you get cold.

Wear comfortable shoes that are easy to dance in. You may end up dancing the night away with coworkers after dinner and gift exchange, so make sure that whatever shoes or boots you wear can accommodate movement without feeling like they're pinching or rubbing anywhere on your foot.

Keep It Fun and Festive

As you get ready for your company's holiday party, remember to keep it fun and festive. There's nothing wrong with a little bit of personal flair—a red dress and a fun sweater are both excellent choices. If you work at an office that is casual and laid back, then jeans and a button-down shirt might be acceptable; but if everyone else is wearing suits and ties, then maybe pull out the suit pants instead.

As far as dressing for the weather goes, this depends on where you live! Some companies host their holiday parties indoors while others take them outside. To avoid feeling uncomfortable, bring layers that you can either dress up or down. We experience some pretty chilly nights here in Central Florida during winter, so it’s best to be prepared.

Wear Party-Ready Shoes

Next, you can prepare your shoes. This may seem like nothing more than a minor detail, but it's important to remember that the most comfortable shoes in the world won't do you much good if they're not party-ready; make sure your footwear is:

  • Comfortable enough for dancing and walking long distances.
  • Easy to clean up after a spill or stain (wear suede or leather)
  • Not too formal—dressy enough for work but casual enough for fun (wear flats/sneakers)

Holiday Parties Are a Great Way to Connect with Co-Workers

A holiday party can be a great way to connect with your co-workers and build camaraderie in the office, but you want to make sure you're standing out for the right reasons at these events. If you're not comfortable, it's hard to enjoy yourself.
